What if the 17-year-old Bristol Palin was a black girl?

(From my recent Huffington Post editorial) — Presidential nominee Barack Obama might have declared Sarah Palin's daughter a non-issue for his campaign staff, but he doesn't work for the media. With all the hoopla surrounding the VP hopeful's daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy, one delicate piece of hypocrisy seems to have blown by with Gustav's winds. What if the 17-year-old Bristol Palin was a black girl? And what if she was, instead, the teenage daughter of Michelle and Barack Obama? . . .

i once asked DL Hughley, "what if britney spears was white?" and he answered, "then we wouldn't be talking about her."

it's apt.

RR, like you, I blogged on HuffPo about this move by the Republicans. Sarah Palin is a Fumblerooski, a play designed to get everyone looking the wrong way. She doesn't have the ball. George Bush still has the ball, and he's trying to hand it off to John McCain. The more focus there is on Palin (and the less on McCain) the closer Republicans can keep the race , maybe close enough to steal it at the end. The focus should stay on McCain. As in "The man has to be either an idiot, or believe that the voters are, to have this woman as his VP." If Bristol Palin were a black girl, it would be an even juicier story for the Republicans. Anything that takes the focus off Pappy McCain is, at this stage of the game, good for the Republicans. The only 'what if' I'm worried about is 'what if enough people can be convinced that this woman's candidacy is somehow legit?'

as i'm watching the republican convention and hearing mitt romney talk about good versus evil and shouts of "USA! USA! USA!" i don't even want to imagine how badly the party would tear apart obama's family in the name of righteousness. what it comes down to is bristol is lucky she is white, and not obama's daughter. she's lucky the party will make excuses for the family. i doubt their party would have ordered this issue untouchable.
